You are entering an experimental facility built to study systems we do not yet understand. Inside each chamber is a phenomenon with hidden rules, unknown causes, and incomplete evidence. Your mission is simple: figure out what is happening. Observe carefully. Change what you can. Measure what follows. Form explanations, test them, and decide what the evidence actually allows you to conclude. You will not be given the answers—and you should not assume that anyone else has them either. The only authority in this laboratory is the evidence.
BLACK BOX develops scientific reasoning by placing players inside authentic problems of uncertainty, evidence and experimentation. Players learn to form and compare hypotheses, make predictions, design informative experiments, isolate variables and evaluate whether evidence supports a conclusion. Through unexpected results, noise, anomalies and competing explanations, they experience the importance of sample size, controls, replication, causation and confounding. The game also develops confidence calibration, critical thinking and intellectual flexibility by requiring players to revise explanations when evidence changes. By confronting confirmation bias, selective evidence and pressure from authority, players explore research integrity and ultimately understand that evidence constrains what we are entitled to claim.
